Chris Cantell Discusses Hacking: Teen 'unlocks' iPhone from AT&T network Notme

A seventeen year old from Glen Rock, New Jersey became the second person in the world that succeeded in hacking the iPhone. According to his blog, George Hotz unlocked Apple's iPhone and used it on his carrier, T-Mobile a rival for the iPhone carrier, AT&T.He said that unlocking the device requires experience taking about two hours and involving an amount of soldering and software, missteps may render the iPhone useless.Hotz confirmed the unlocking the phone in front of a AP reporter that brought his T-Mobile SIM card for replacing with the original AT&T card. He was able to connect to the T-Mobile's network and placed calls using the reporter's account.By using Hotz's instructions, iPhone's functions remain intact but the visual voicemail it is disabled."Some of my friends think I wasted my summer but I think it was worth it," he told The Record of Bergen County, which reported Hotz's hack Friday.Analysts say that Apple still has time to modify the iPhone production line to make new phones invulnerable, but the procedure if very difficult and is likely to keep it confined to hardcore hobbyists."I'm having a hard time figuring out where the real pain is going to come from in this," said David Chamberlain, principal analyst with market researcher In-Stat who follows mobile devices and services. "Just selling the piece of hardware, they've made a nice profit off that."

Twenty-five years ago, the virus was born Corina Ciubotaru

This year marks the anniversary of 25 years since the first virus was released onto the unsuspecting world. It was the brainchild of a 9th grader named Rich Skrenta, who liked to play pranks on his friends. So, when he got an Apple II computer as a gift, he started using technology to make fun of them. At first, he tampered with their floppy disks, getting them to show certain messages when they were inserted in the computer; later viruses created by Skrenta would render the game unplayable after a certain amount of time, which ultimately led to his friends not trusting him anymore and forbidding him from borrowing their disks. He created what is now known as a "boot sector" virus, which infects the computer and all the disks that are inserted into it afterwards. After his friends got sick of getting their games messed up, he went on to install his program on the school computers and from then on, the users took care of the rest. Since then, millions of viruses have infected countless computers and have evolved along with the world. Modern viruses are being transmitted through the internet, by e-mail and attachments, and are much more commercial in purpose. They cause huge losses to some companies and high gains for antivirus developers. Some allow the creator to gain control of the infected computer and use it as a cover for other malicious activities. The virus has come a long way and it looks like it's here to stay as long as people have personal computers and the need to do bad things to others.

SigEx Ventures : The poor American Economy...

Illegal hardware made overseas and imported in the USA raised a huge scandal about people who bought and played counterfeit software on Sony's PlayStation 2, Microsoft's Xbox and Xbox 360, and Nintendo's Wii..After a year-long investigation federal agents executed 32 search warrants against trafficking in illegal devices.I understand why one would pirate PlayStation and sell it cheaper, but how cheap can you sell the Wii?!It's kind of funny that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimated that the U.S. economy loses from $200 billion to $250 billion each year because of counterfeiting and piracy. How can they assume that everybody who used counterfeit items, mp3's, game console cracks, videos would have really gone out and bought the real things? Why do people use counterfeit items? Are they snobs who simply want to sabotage industries or are they people who can't afford certain stuff the legal way? The majority is represented by people who can't afford to buy original CDs or DVDs or to pay $499 for a game console. And here's another thought, just because the money is being spent illegally it doesn't necessarily mean the money leaves the U.S.A. Economy.I do not want by any chance to encourage traffic or counterfeiting, but the U.S. Chamber of Commerce can't make me feel sorry for the recording industries, for Sony's PlayStation, for Microsoft or for Nintendo with such unrealistic calculus.

SigEx Telecom : Rush to Ajax makes for happy hackers

Wednesday at the Black Hat USA conference in Las Vegas, security researchers warned software developers using Asynchronous Javascript and XML (Ajax) techniques that they might face security issues, sites enabled with Ajax being dangerously vulnerable to a variety of Web-based threats of which they're not even aware.Ajax techniques are very popular among web developers, it allows web sites to be more responsive to user input compared to traditional pages. Sites like Google, Yahoo and other popular sites are already using Ajax, considering it more efficient because they don't have to reload the Web page every time content needs to be refreshed.A site coded with Ajax may offer to hackers opportunities like: to tear the application to shreds, booking free flights, accessing coupon codes, hijacking the administration functions and stealing everyone's account information. All this by using flaws that popular AJAX resource ignore: Improper use of client-side XSLT; Use of overly- or underly-granular server-side APIs; and storing secrets (either data or functionality) in client-side code; exploiting Ajax race conditions, and Applying static analysis to deobfuscate client-side JavaScript."Any secrets stored in JavaScript, whether secret data like discount codes or database connection strings, or secret functionality like backdoor administrative access, will be found and exploited," says Billy Hoffman, lead R&D engineer at Web security vendor SPI Dynamics in Atlanta.

Identity theft victims help catch the bad guys
by Corina Ciubotaru

Identity theft is one of the most recent, but common types of crime. If a hacker somehow finds a way to use your bank account and starts spending your money, it's identity theft. And it's a nightmare if it happens to you: you will soon have no money, your checks will bounce, you cards will become useless and the bank will still blame you for not keeping your account functional. It will probably take a very long time to get the problem sorted out with the bank and don't expect it to be easy. If you discover you are the victim of identity theft, the first thing you should do is to place a fraud alert on your credit reports, to prevent the hacker from opening accounts in your name. The fraud alert can be placed at any of these three companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Next, you should try to close the accounts that have been tampered with then file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission which has a special Identity Theft Hotline. Last but not least, you should report your trouble to the police. Hackers are many, but every once in a while, one of them gets caught. This time, it was Max Ray Butler from San Francisco, who stole account information and then sold it to various buyers for a few hundred dollars. He was known as Iceman and now risks 40 years of prison and a fine of $1.5 million if he is found guilty on all five charges. He was arrested on September 5th in California.

iPhone rumors
by Claudia Sonea

This long expected product of Apple, that promised a lot since the first rumor of its release, has raised numerous problems until now. It is true that the iPhone practically sell itself because of its benefits, but it is also true that various issues appeared in connection with it. Researchers found out that due to its flaws we are exposed to hackers and we can easily become targets. Moreover the most bizarre thing is that you can use it like a bomb and become a terrorist without even know it. Nowadays there is another problem, however this time everything favors the producers, so hackers are not quite sure if it's a rumor spread to scary them or if it is indeed true that the iPhone update seriously harms phones that were modified to work with other networks than the its exclusive partner, AT&T Inc. The update is supposed to give access to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store and to fix some of the security flaws discovered after it was released. Gizmodo and Engadget among some other Web sites, including some online postings from hackers, supported the official statement saying that many iPhones after the update no longer worked, but that depending on the unlock program they used. Also in some cases the devices worked if the original SIM card with AT&T was introduced again. Still the Apple history of playing cat and mouse with hackers left some of them in doubt and with the presumption that all is a tactic to scare them off. Furthermore it is optional to use the update, so the European consumers that bought the device from US at the price of $388 and then unlocked it can stay calm. We- the Europeans- are forced to appeal to such tactics due to the fact that the iPhone will not be on our market until November. Stay connected and away from any software update if you poses an iPhone. Enjoy!

The RIAA's trials are getting serious
by Corina Ciubotaru

Finally, the RIAA went to trial with a person accused of sharing music illegally. After sending 4,000 pre-trial letters and suing 26,000 people, most of who settled instead of fighting against the system. One woman decided the fight is worth it and today she appeared in court to tell the jury, which includes an amateur musician, her side of the story. Jammie Thomas and her lawyer Brian Toder are determined to prove the RIAA wrong and they started by making the record companies prove that they actually own the songs and that Mrs. Thomas, aged 30, shared them over the network. She has a point and she knows it, agreeing to pay a lawyer instead of settling, and the judge has already dismissed some papers from the record companies after Toder argued they have been issued seven months too late. The plaintiffs are asking for up to $3.9 million and both Toder and Thomas are prepared to go all the way and not let themselves get bullied by the record companies. The trial is supposed to end Thursday and is held in Duluth, as this is the nearest city to Brainard, Minnesota, where Jammie Thomas lives and raises her two kids, aged 11 and 13. The RIAA represents Virgin Records, Capitol Records, Sony BMG, Arista Records, Interscope Records, Warner Bros. Records and UMG Recordings and is represented in court by attorney Richard Gabriel from Denver. They said they want to raise awareness a bit with these trials and that's why they have agreed to settle under the minimum limit imposed by the law.

Dangerous databases
by Jana Kokavcova

Whole world is full of data about people, countries, nature!about everything. Everything you would like to know is written in computer. Some information about your life you could find in one of them too. Why is it so? Are we under eye loupe every day from our born? Maybe it is so. But what can we do against that. Nothing. Because private life really does not exist. Yes it is very sad situation, but you are only one small human with small requirements and nobody ask you if you would like to be a part of system. You are. If you would like or not. High technologies give us possibility to build system like this. Complicated? Maybe, but not for IT workers that have several information and knowledge about technologies that we really don't understand. Simple for them is really hard for us. Data make our life. Government is of course happy to know everything about you. You are under the control of them. Like in a horror? Yes, maybe it is crazy, but really true. And what will happen if there are some hackers who know how to come into a system and steal some information about you? They could be very powerful. Because no one system is as hard as could human brain be. So hackers go to system and find what is useful for them. It could be very dangerous because in system are lot of information about government, army, presidents, plans, nuclear weapons! This all could be very dangerous in hands of criminal. What should we do? Maybe it is only a natural development of technology and we should do nothing to change it. There will still be good brains that will help us to save data and bad brains that will always find new ways how to steal information.
