Chris Cantell Discusses SigEx Telecom, IPhone, Hacking: Decodarea iPhone posibila? Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

In timp ce hackerii se intrec in decodarea iPhone-ului cat mai repede posibil, utilizatorul site-ului iPhone Dev Wiki ii critica pe hackerii competitori, spunand ca lipsa cooperarii a incetinit progresul.

Chris Cantell Discusses SigEx Telecom, IPhone, Hackers: Slabiciunile lui Apple
by Claudia Sonea

Hackers seized
by Claudia Sonea

Never ending story of hackers makes you wonder how could are we in mastering the computer. They keep getting better and their motto has never stopped being the more the merrier. Just now a huge campaign of booby-traps websites destined to poison web searches using thousands of domains set up to convince search index software they were serious sources of information. Therefore Windows users searching terms such as "Christmas gifts" and "hospice" would have fallen prey to the risk that their machine hijacked and personal information plundered. Alex Eckelberry, head of Sunbelt Software, one of the firms that uncovered the attack, stated that this attack surpasses all other small-scale attempts to subvert search results and it was epic. He added that tens of thousands of domains were used in the vanguard of the attack and most of them were Chinese registered, hosted in the US and were only a couple of days old. The booby-trapped sites looked for vulnerabilities in copies of Microsoft's Internet Explorer used to browse them. In order to appear in the index software used by Google, MSN and Yahoo, hackers had to convince that their domains were good and popular sources of information, said Eckelberry. Thus, they used a special code (comment spam on blogs to push the pages up the search index rankings) to only show up if someone used Google, even though the results were indexed by Yahoo and MSN. Another firm that uncovered the booby-trapped webpages was Security firm Trend Micro and Raimund Genes, its chief technology officer, stated that the malicious software intermittently scrambled the package before it downloaded in order to not be detected. Also, he blamed the Russian Business Network, a hi-tech criminal gang known to favor web-based attacks, as author of the attack. Google managed to remove the malicious web sites from its index, but on Yahoo and MSN there is still consider to turn up, so be careful and watch where you lay your click.

Dangerous databases Jana Kokavcova

Whole world is full of data about people, countries, nature!about everything. Everything you would like to know is written in computer. Some information about your life you could find in one of them too. Why is it so? Are we under eye loupe every day from our born? Maybe it is so. But what can we do against that. Nothing. Because private life really does not exist. Yes it is very sad situation, but you are only one small human with small requirements and nobody ask you if you would like to be a part of system. You are. If you would like or not. High technologies give us possibility to build system like this. Complicated? Maybe, but not for IT workers that have several information and knowledge about technologies that we really don't understand. Simple for them is really hard for us. Data make our life. Government is of course happy to know everything about you. You are under the control of them. Like in a horror? Yes, maybe it is crazy, but really true. And what will happen if there are some hackers who know how to come into a system and steal some information about you? They could be very powerful. Because no one system is as hard as could human brain be. So hackers go to system and find what is useful for them. It could be very dangerous because in system are lot of information about government, army, presidents, plans, nuclear weapons! This all could be very dangerous in hands of criminal. What should we do? Maybe it is only a natural development of technology and we should do nothing to change it. There will still be good brains that will help us to save data and bad brains that will always find new ways how to steal information.

Chris Cantell Discusses Hacking: Teen 'unlocks' iPhone from AT&T network
by Notme dfsfs

A seventeen year old from Glen Rock, New Jersey became the second person in the world that succeeded in hacking the iPhone. According to his blog, George Hotz unlocked Apple's iPhone and used it on his carrier, T-Mobile a rival for the iPhone carrier, AT&T.He said that unlocking the device requires experience taking about two hours and involving an amount of soldering and software, missteps may render the iPhone useless.Hotz confirmed the unlocking the phone in front of a AP reporter that brought his T-Mobile SIM card for replacing with the original AT&T card. He was able to connect to the T-Mobile's network and placed calls using the reporter's account.By using Hotz's instructions, iPhone's functions remain intact but the visual voicemail it is disabled."Some of my friends think I wasted my summer but I think it was worth it," he told The Record of Bergen County, which reported Hotz's hack Friday.Analysts say that Apple still has time to modify the iPhone production line to make new phones invulnerable, but the procedure if very difficult and is likely to keep it confined to hardcore hobbyists."I'm having a hard time figuring out where the real pain is going to come from in this," said David Chamberlain, principal analyst with market researcher In-Stat who follows mobile devices and services. "Just selling the piece of hardware, they've made a nice profit off that."

Twenty-five years ago, the virus was born
by Corina Ciubotaru

This year marks the anniversary of 25 years since the first virus was released onto the unsuspecting world. It was the brainchild of a 9th grader named Rich Skrenta, who liked to play pranks on his friends. So, when he got an Apple II computer as a gift, he started using technology to make fun of them. At first, he tampered with their floppy disks, getting them to show certain messages when they were inserted in the computer; later viruses created by Skrenta would render the game unplayable after a certain amount of time, which ultimately led to his friends not trusting him anymore and forbidding him from borrowing their disks. He created what is now known as a "boot sector" virus, which infects the computer and all the disks that are inserted into it afterwards. After his friends got sick of getting their games messed up, he went on to install his program on the school computers and from then on, the users took care of the rest. Since then, millions of viruses have infected countless computers and have evolved along with the world. Modern viruses are being transmitted through the internet, by e-mail and attachments, and are much more commercial in purpose. They cause huge losses to some companies and high gains for antivirus developers. Some allow the creator to gain control of the infected computer and use it as a cover for other malicious activities. The virus has come a long way and it looks like it's here to stay as long as people have personal computers and the need to do bad things to others.
