SigEx Telecom : Apple TV hacked
by Ana Maria Ciobanu
All Apple TV users kept wondering what's with the external USB storage. Now they can be happy to find out and follow some steps to try it at: http://www.appletvhacks.net/2007/07/28/usb-patch-released-hallelujah/ To install this patch you need version 1.0 of the Apple TV software (current version is 1.1). The instructions are pretty complicated. You need: Intel-Mac, OS X files, Apple TV Software 1.0, an original, unmodified copy of the "mach_kernel.prelink' file from the Apple TV, An external USB drive formatted using "Journaled HFS. Then appletvhacks.net explains you the procedure. I read it and it sounded a little like Chinese to me but of course I'm no hacker, nor an Apple TV user. Apple TV users were very happy to hear this news and got on hacking their gadgets. After two days the website launched a proposal to the community : "We feel that the highest priority is to make the patch work with Apple TV software 1.1. Reverting back your Apple TV software to the previous version is just a step backward. One shouldn't have to be forced to do this. So what are you waiting for? Help us out. All lines are opened, operators are standing by." Here is a crazy idea and correct me if I am wrong. Haven't these people already payed $299 or $399 for their gadgets? Why doesn't Apple do something about it? Is it that hard to release a software update and allow their customers to use what ever USB hard drives they want. It's their money right? Here is an even crazier thought...is TV that important? I can find at least 50 better things to do instead of watching TV without giving it to much thought. Tastes aren't discussable so it's everyone's call what gadget they buy but it's not right for people to be forced to hack their gadgets, Apple should do something in this direction
